Joel Baer Quartet: “If I Should Lose You”

Joel Baer got in touch with me about engineering his jazz album. We talked about how I could help achieve a specific sound and I suggested to record his album the way Rudy Van Gelder used to record: All the musicians play in one room with microphones set up around them. No overdubs. When the time came to record, my role in this project was strictly on the engineering side — no artistic input was given by me because I wasn’t a member of the band and I thought they sounded excellent to begin with.

Personnel

Joel Baer: Drums

Natalie Lande: Tenor Saxophone

Conor Roe: Electric Bass

Kenny Thompson: Electric Guitar

Time Crash: “Jamie”

Chris Rice, guitarist of Time Crash and half of Rice Custom Guitars, asked me to mix what Time Crash had been working on. From what I remember they had recorded everything through some kind of stand-alone portastudio. Couple of SM57’s along with some other stuff. This is a pretty dark sounding track and I think they liked that I did this pan effect on the backing vocal as if the vocalist is creeping up from the lead. By the way, Time Crash is a Dr. Who tribute band — they write their songs based on themes from the show. Chris even designed a Tardis Guitar.

S.T. Monroe: “Stay Wait Leave Go”

I was in a band a long time ago called s.t. monroe. We stopped playing around 2008 but in October 2016 I had the urge to record a song, so I asked my former bandmates to come over to the studio. This is the result.
